Biography

On Friday March 18, 2011 the sun set on James E. (P.I.) Smith Jr. He was born on June 17, 1949 to the late James Edward Sr. and Annie Mae McGeorge Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Norma Jean Durham and brother, Frank McGeorge Smith. James attended Roanoke City Schools. He accepted Christ and joined Maple Street Baptist Church at an early age. Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Saundra (Cliff) Cuff, Barrett, Corey, Carlos (Tameka), Cedric Smith and Charles Buckner; sisters and brothers, Barbara (Dwight) Carter, Rev. Lillian (Herbert) Taylor, Mark (Barbara) Smith, Leroy (Virginia) Smith, Paul (Diane) Smith, Yvonne Robertson, Paula (Charles) Banks, Diane Smith, George, Tony, David and Marcus Smith; 17 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren including one special great-grandson, Demarcus (Scoot) Hodge; aunts and uncle, Bertha McGeorge, Gladys McGeorge and Bobby Smith; childhood best friend, Roger Bailey; a devoted friend, Ruth Ward; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, March 24, 2011 in the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel with the Rev. Brian Jackson officiating. Interment will be in Williams Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the funeral service. Friends may call on Wednesday afternoon for viewing at Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home.
